What makes the Separett Villa Waterless Compost Toilet so unique, and how does it work?

Table of Contents

Getting your head around the idea that you can have a toilet that a) doesn’t need water, b) doesn’t need a sewerage connection, c) doesn’t smell, and d) can create a nutritious compost, can be difficult! It seems to defy logic and yet it’s all possible.

Once you understand the basics, there’s that ‘ah-ha’ moment when it all becomes clear. To help you understand how a Separett urine-diverting toilet works, check out our short video animation which should hopefully make it all clear!

There’s so much more to the Separett Villa than you might think so let’s have a look at some of the design, features, thoughtfulness and Swedish cleverness that make the Villa better than the other ‘wanna be’ compost toilets, and hence makes it the smarter, wiser, and best value investment for you.

Looks like a regular toilet

Firstly and importantly, it looks more or less like a regular toilet. Don’t underestimate this fact if you are having people over who have never used a compost toilet before! Making it look familiar is an advantage in winning ‘hearts and minds’ of skeptical users.

Room for your feet

Room for your feet. Just like a flushing toilet, the front of the Villa has a cut away for your feet, so using the Villa is just like using a flushing toilet. Ahh, home comfort!

Female friendly

The height of the seat of the Villa is designed to be ideal for the average female user, ensuring they can comfortably sit in the best position for the separator to work efficiently. Of course, everyone will find the Villa comfortable!

For guys, like all toilets based around a urine separator, it’s important to sit down to wee – this ensures urine always goes where it should.

Child friendly option

Very young children can struggle with separator-based toilets as their legs are not long enough to enable them to sit in the correct position. The optional (at additional cost) Child Seat Adaptor has been developed by Separett to fit perfectly and can be placed and removed in seconds. It ensures the child is in the right place to use the toilet without any mess!

Separett Villa 9000 Lid Open

Nothing on view

When you lift the seat or lid on many compost toilets, you are staring at the previous users deposits, or a mixture of sawdust, loo paper and ‘yuk’! On the Villa, there’s a concealing screen which automatically moves to the side as you sit down, and closes as you stand up. Neat!

Multi-voltage – mains or battery powered

The the odour extracting fan in the Villa can be powered directly from a 12v DC supply (ideal if you are off-grid and have a solar panel and batter), or by mains electricity (230v AC) with the supplied mains adaptor – just plus it into a standard 3-pin socket.

It’s incredibly cheap to run too: the fan uses around 2.5 watts of power, which is half the consumption of a typical LED light bulb

Simple to use – no sawdust required

Unlike some competitive products, the Villa doesn’t require you to use sawdust or other organic cover material. This is because the superior design and location of the fan is optimised to bring a good air flow over the solids container and extract all odours. With the concealer screen hiding the contents from view, cover material is completely unnecessary in the toilet meaning less for the user to do, less mess and more capacity (so less emptying).

When it comes to composting, you should add some carbon-based material when you empty the contents of Villa into the compost bin, but keeping it out of the toilet just makes sense in a domestic setting – no mess!

No poo mountains!

Every time you sit on the toilet, the circular solids container automatically rotates by a couple of degrees. This means solids are not being deposited in the same place, which can lead to a poo ‘mountain’ and poor use of the container capacity. Clever thinking by Separett maximises the capacity so less frequent emptying for you.

Whisper quiet

The fan on the Villa is very quiet so it’s not intrusive in the dead of night. It’s also super efficient at removing all the odours by virtue of proven design and air flow through the 75mm vent pipes that allows the air to move easily. Sleep tight with the Villa.

Keep rain and condensation out

Although the vent pipe extends outside your building, you needn’t worry about any rain or condensation falling back down the pipe and into the toilet. The first obstacle is the clever vent cover that allows air flow but helps keep rain away. The Villa also has a sump that catches any rainwater or condensation and allows it to run into the urine pipe, where it flows out to your soakaway. That’s thorough and detailed design!

Installation kit included

The standard installation kit that comes with every Villa gives you most things you’ll need to install it in typical situations (excluding tools). A 40cm length of vent pipe is enough to run directly through the outside wall behind your toilet. A spare waste container, insect screens and vent covers are all there.

If you can’t, or don’t want to run the vent out behind the toilet, you can take the pipe up higher, or around a corner, or through the roof. Optional vent pipe kits, connectors and other items are are available from our webshop.

Still not sure? Well, rest assured that you’re in good company – the Villa went into production over 25 years ago and Separett have sold around 150,000 Villa models worldwide.
